Amended Snow Removal Ordinance
January 1, 2012
The Snow Removal Ordinance (Section 28 -26) has been amended to require a property owner to clear snow/ice from all sidewalks fronting his/her property within 24 hours after a snowfall. Clearing includes the side-street, if you own/live on a corner. The City Manager will decide when 24 hours has ended. Clearing is defined by ADA regulations and so one shovel-wide clearing is not considered adequate.
If it is not cleared, you will be issued a notice. Failure to comply will trigger clearing by the City or a private contractor hired by the City. You will be billed the cost. It may be costly. A violation “constitutes a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable by jail time or a fine or both.”
If medial reasons, age or other factors will not allow you to clear sidewalks, the City has a list for “snow removal assistance.” Check the City web site http://www.charlottevsille.org or call 434-970-3700 to be put on the list or to volunteer to help clear.
