The Zoo of Humanity: Origami & Poetry Workshop and Book Release Event is a two part event that brings origami and poetry together, giving participants the opportunity to create a "poem-i-gami" piece: an origami animal and then write a poem about that animal.

After that, local poet Jason F. Blakely, Sr., will share an interesting story on what inspired this workshop and this collection, then read a select number poems from his book, and will take questions afterwards.

The poems in The Zoo of Humanity boldly speak about the unique human experience in an open, honest, and unapologetic way. They challenge us to hold a mirror to the world, so that it can see the unnecessary damage it has caused, so that we can work toward meaningful restoration. These poems challenge us to hold a mirror to ourselves, forcing us to recognize the blessings of being alive, and the burdens that comes with living.

These poems hold us accountable for the choices we willingly make; and give grace and mercy for the decisions we were forced to make, against our morals and better judgment, refining hope in the fire of forgiveness. These poems reflect our weaknesses and our strengths; mental, physical, and spiritual and leaves the door open for healing, reconciliation, and peace with the world and more importantly with ourselves.
